Bio

Irene Pantelis is a Bolivian-Uruguayan-American visual artist based in Maryland, working primarily in the areas of drawing and animation. Infused in Latin America’s magic realism, her work engages narratives of identity, memory, displacement and ecology, informed by diverse mythological, historical, cultural and environmental events. She initially pursued a career as a labor lawyer, leaving it behind at 36 to become an artist, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Maryland at College Park, where she is now a professor. Her work is held in private and public collections and has been featured at Studio Gallery, Glen Echo’s Stone Tower Gallery, the Mattie Kelley Arts Center in Florida, and multiple other local and national venues.
